HOA SAYS TO TAKE DOWN CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

MESA, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -
Homeowners in one Valley neighborhood are upset with their home owner association for trying to take a piece of Christmas away.
Several families in the Muirfield Village community in Mesa said the HOA has told them to take down their holiday decorations.
For the first time in the eight years Carole Rector has owned her condo, she got a letter from her HOA that said her Christmas lights are out of line.
“I called the community director and said, ‘Are you serious that I have to take them down?’ And she said yes, that the board had decided no decorations this year,” Rector said.
The HOA president rents his condo out and doesn’t actually live in the community.
New board member Michelle Rockwell lives in the community and said she isn’t a huge fan of how strict the rules are either.
“In the HOA rules it states that you can't put up any decorations or lights, you know, if you're fastening anything to the outside of the house because the outside of the house is actually not yours,” said Rockwell, who said she has only been on the board for two months.
Rockwell said past boards always allowed holiday decorations, but this year even she got a letter instructing her to take down lights she used to frame her front door.
“They're taking a hard line on the people that live here,” said Rockwell, referring to the board as a whole.
She added the next board meeting is in January, and homeowners are welcome to come voice their concerns.
