White or Colored Christmas Lights

THE GREAT DEBATE – WHITE OR COLORED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS?

I love all kinds of Christmas lights! Lately I have been seeing a lot of debates over whether to decorate with white or colored Christmas lights? I personally believe to each's own and enjoy looking at both. White Christmas lights look so elegant and remind me of a winter wonderland, while colored Christmas lights look so magical and a little more festive. Of the hundreds of thousands of strings of lights sold each year by one leading vendor, Christmas Lights Etc., 70 percent are white. BUT if I may add, many people mix white with colored, which may just be my favorite. I have to use colored because that's what my kids love! It's really all about my kids for me.

Now I couldn't believe this but it's really true. BRACE YOURSELF:

The fine folks of the Doylestown Station Condominium Association in Pennsylvania apparently don't like colored lights. So much so, in fact, that they actually had a merry-spirited woman fined $400 for daring to use colored lights in their all white-light neighborhood. The incident took place last year, so the woman, Marie Buonanno, isn't daring to venture into colored-light territory again this year. Instead, she's opted for a lightless condo with only a lone wreath hanging, forlornly, from her front door. Rumor has it, a single tear was seen falling from it on midnight the day it was hung. See, the community in which Buonanno resides isn't run by communists, it's run by people who have a deep appreciation of what they think is classy, tasteful holiday decorum. Not only are white, non-blinking lights the protocol for outside, residents can only put up a single white, blue, or orange light in their windows.

In response, the Association sent out a survey. Out of 38 total responses, 19 voted for white lights, 14 voted for colored non-blinking lights, and 5 voted for colored blinking. The board said the vote was 19-14 against colored lights, interpreting the 5 votes as a separate category.

“As long as it’s tasteful,” says neighbor Marc Udell, “let the community do what the community is going to do.” No one answered the door at the Association president’s house. Some neighbors say they like the look of white lights.“Some colored lights are pretty and they have their place in neighborhoods, but you never really know how far people are going to go with them,” says Jeff Edwards. It will be a holiday of white lights for Buonanno and her neighborhood. She says for now she will miss her colored lights and the holiday cheer they brought to her home. Part of the fun of the holidays is learning and seeing how other people celebrate. If everyone did the same thing, that would be terribly boring. That's just how I feel, though.

What do you think, white or colored christmas lights? And what do you think of fining for colored lights?
